The goal to keep your Mac clean and healthy is always at the top of our list. That`s why we’ve decided to share some Mac hacks with you. To make a long story short, here we will answer the question that bothers many Mac users ‘Can I delete dmg files?’ Of course, you can, and we will show you how you can easily find and delete .dmg and .pkg files from your Mac.
You`ve probably heard about .dmg and .pkg files, but don`t worry if not – we will explain it below. DMG files are mountable Disk Image files that comprise raw block data. Typically, it is compressed, but it can also be encrypted. You don`t need any disk to make these files, though early on, it worked like this.
You would insert a CD ROM, double click the installer, and here you go. Today, installation is the way easier than it used to be. Instead of a physical disk, you are dealing with its digital reconstruction. DMG file is executed in a virtual image of the mounted drive. It`s sort of an archive that mounts a virtual disk on your desktop once opened. You probably encountered with this type of file if you ever downloaded an application not from the App Store.
Once you double click on the mounted virtual disk, you will find an application itself. You need to copy it from the disk image to the application folder and start installation. After installation, you will probably forget to delete images you no longer need, while the size of such images may exceed the size of the application you`ve installed. God knows how much space they can gobble up.
The same happens when you come across .PKG files. These are self-extracting archives used for additional apps to the primary installations in your Applications folder. In other words, .PKG files come to the rescue if you need to apply additional files and settings to the system. Mind that this action is prohibited by App Store rules. In most cases, .PKG files are used for drivers. After installation, you have to delete .PKG files, but you will definitely not do it, thus clogging you hard drive over time.
Of course, if you`re used to saving all your files in the same place, then finding and removing them will be easy. Since it happens once in a blue moon, we`d rather move on to those users, who save files chaotically and, therefore, deal with a nightmare called ‘search of files’. Thousands of files on your Mac must be reviewed before you will find what you`re looking for. However, thanks to a couple of Mac tricks, deleting those files will become just a piece of cake for you. Sounds intriguing? Then let`s start!
Go to the Finder and click on a search box in the upper right corner. Then, enter ‘pkg’ or ‘dmg’, depending on what you`re looking for.
In the appearing menu, select the following sections: Kinds -> Disk Image. Right after it will show you all KPG or DMG files stored on your hard drive. Remove them all together. Besides, this life hack is handy for any type of files.
Hope, we shed some light on this issue and helped you become a bit more tech savvy than you used to be about ten minutes ago.
