If you`re used to getting maximum out of MacOS Sierra, you already know about a super nice perk it has. If not, we`ll be there for you to make it clear. Apple`s MacOS Sierra offers a totally new way of storage optimization.
All innovative options are now available in Apple menu -> About This Mac -> Storage -> Manage button. You`ll get an overview of free space on your Mac along with recommendations for storage optimization. One of the features that we want to talk about is Reduce Clutter. It finds and removes large and old files you may never need and identifies folders you`ve probably forgotten about. Deleting such a folder would save up gigabytes of your disk space. That`s why let us figure out how your Mac will benefit from this feature.
Mac Big Files - How Do You Find Them?
Access Storage and Press Menu button to see all optimization tools. Then choose Reduce Clutter and click Review files.
You will get access to all old and large files you might no longer need. All of them will be sorted by categories such as Documents, Trash, Applications, iTunes, GarageBand, and iOS Files. Some categories allow you to remove unnecessary files directly.
You need to move the pointer over the file name and click the X button. The files will be instantly deleted. If you happen to buy a file from the iBooks Store, iTunes store, or Mac App Store, you might able to download it once again. Other categories let you check the total storage space taken by the files of each app. Open the app and choose the files you want to remove.
Other Features Aside From Large File Finder on Mac
Finding large files with Reduce Clutter is cool, but MacOS Sierra has some extra features that you will love. Let`s have a closer look at each of them:
Store in iCloud
You can store your files and photos in iCloud. To enable iCloud storage, go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Options next to iCloud Drive. If you don`t have the Options button, make sure you`ve enabled iCloud. Press Store in iCloud button and tick Desktop and Documents to keep your files on iCloud Drive. If you want to enable iCloud Photo Library, go to Mac menu -> System Preferences -> iCloud. Then, click Options button next to Photos and select iCloud Photo Library.
Optimize Storage option handles iTunes files and mail attachments. To enable it for iTunes files, go to iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced. Then, click ‘Automatically delete watched movies and TV shows.’
If you want to manage mail attachments, go to Mail -> Preferences -> Accounts. In this section, Optimize Storage changes Download Attachment menu to either none or recent.
Along with these features, there are other perks such as Empty Trash Automatically which deletes all files stored in the trash bin for more than 30 days. MacOS Sierra also lets you easily remove duplicates and reminds you to delete app installers. It helps you clear cache and even more.
