For starters, what is Siri at all? Siri is Apple’s artificial intelligence (AI) assistant that uses language processing, voice recognition and machine learning to be the helper you need. Siri was initially launched on iOS but has been made available for macOS with the Sierra upgrade. On a Mac, Siri shares similar functionality, operates by the same logic & technologies as on iOS, but at the same time, does more things that Mac owners will find useful.
Siri on a MacBook: What Can It Do?
The easiest way to find out about that is to ask Siri directly. Siri on Mac is pretty great as an assistant, you can use the AI to schedule meetings, reply to messages, find files, google info, set up reminders and even ask for sports scores. Siri can also tweak things upon your request like change screen brightness, volume, turn Bluetooth on/off etc. This kind of utility is subjective though, as making such adjustments with a manual click of a button is still more convenient in most cases.
How to Turn Siri Off on Mac
Right off the bat, you should know that you can only disable and cannot fully uninstall Siri from your Mac. Its roots are planted all over the system which makes removing it too big of a hassle.
Moreover, Siri can access a whole list of things on your Mac. From knowing the content of your Messages and Mail, to content of your documents. The good news is that these are only accessed on your demand – that is when you are asking to look up something within those files – and none of this data is sent to Apple servers. Stuff like your location and technical details of your Mac are being sent, but not the response itself. You can find more info on what is being sent by reading Siri Privacy before enabling/disabling it.
To disable Siri manually, follow these steps:
- Click on Apple menu in the top left corner
- Open System Preferences
- Spot the Siri icon and click it to access the settings
- Uncheck the Enable Siri box on the left pane
- Confirm that you want to disable Siri on your Mac
- Uncheck the Show Siri in menu bar box to remove Siri icon from the menu bar
- Follow these steps again when/if you decide to re-enable Siri
If you want to take privacy protection further, continue by removing adware, bloatware and cleaning your cookies & cache. This can be done manually or using MacFly Pro.
This is everything you need to know to manually disable Siri on your Mac. If you have a change of heart, you can follow the same simple steps to enable Siri again.
